Is this grab bar placement mandatory?

✅ Yes! ADA requires a horizontal grab bar on the side wall of the toilet in all accessible restrooms.

What is the standard grab bar length?

• The standard side wall horizontal grab bar length is 42″.

What are the ADA grab bar placement requirements?

According to the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design:

• A 42″ (1065 mm) minimum length grab bar is required on the side wall.

• Must be mounted at a height of 33″–36″ (840–915 mm) above the finished floor.

• Placement:

  • Spaced a maximum of 12″ (305 mm) from the rear wall.

  • Must extend a minimum of 54″ (1370 mm) from the rear wall.

Exception

• Where a full 42″ side wall bar is not possible:

  • A 24″ (610 mm) minimum grab bar may be used.

  • Must still be mounted no more than 12″ (305 mm) from the rear wall.
